Thanks for the suggestions.

It's not looping.   ps shows only anaconda running, and strace shows
a select() waiting on stdin.   When you hit return on the main console,
anaconda goes on with the rest of the install.

This is an older Dell, 700MHz with just one ATA disk on hda and a CD drive
on hdc.
