Both the ~/.ICE* and the ~/.xsess* had dots. I was
just careless writing them up, especially since
other places in the OS did not have dots.

alias gls='ls -a | grep -i'
You might try 'ls -A' (suppresses listing '.' and '..')
Another good one: 'ls -last ...' (for mnemonic value)

Sweet! Thank you.
During the troubleshooting I had a fc39 mate live usb fired
up in a virtual machine. I used the following to hunt down
all the xsessions, .ICE*, etc.. I could find no difference.
# find / -iname \*xsess\*
It eventually occurred to me that X11 was not the issue.
