Earlier in this thread Jeffrey Walton suggested that you do "sudo systemctl set-default multi-user.target" to temporarily set your system to a plain console login while you troubleshoot. Did you do this? Check it with "sudo systemctl get-default". If it says that it's set to "multi-user.target" then change it: "sudo systemctl set-default graphical.target" And reboot.
