I've had two Brother printers/scanners, currently a MFC-7820N, and never had any issues running them under Fedora. Brother Linux support has been great. I'm using Xsane for the scanner.

In the past I have had near infinite trouble getting scanners

P.S. The epson isn't quite as bad as HP forbidding you from using
the scanner if it is out of ink, but it finally decayed to the
point that it decided there were errors with the ink cartridges,
and nothing would allow it to use the scanner after that.
