I'd always suspect the 3.5 mm connectors, they're extremely unreliable (which isn't helped by the poor adherence to making them the correct dimensions). These days I like HDMI monitors with built-in speakers, less mess on the desk that way. Of course most don't sound good, but they're okay for listening to someone speak.
