On a side note, I go back a long way, and remember when most people were assuming that the issue had to be hardware, even when it was obvious (to me) that it was almost certainly software. Now, hardware is so reliable that most people never consider that it's at fault and keep trying to find a software solution that can't exist. I'm not saying that you should look at the hardware first, but don't ignore the possibility.
