I don't know anybody who regularly retro-mods their archives for reasons of taste, but on the Mailman lists "how do I get this hazmat out of my archive" is a FAQ. It's a little inconvenient, but could easily be applied to retro-modding. Why? GDPR, for the obvious hors d'oeuvre. Then there's the occasional spam that makes it through. And unwary admins who strip and store attachments frequently later discover they contain malware or caches of stolen credentials, etc. If you allow download of mbox archives, stolen credentials can be hidden in message header fields that the web interface and user MUAs don't display.
