this mystery has been resolved and my server is online.

i am profusely grateful for the  wisdom of folks on this list including,
Ed, Samuel, George, Tim, Gordon, Richard, and Cameron.

At that point the Nighthawk would be just another switch, which doesn't
seem helpful *or* secure.

The Nighthawk also provides a wifi access point.
