I'm starting to think that my copy of gnome might be broken. I have two files wtf.desktop and vicious.desktop that are identical except for the Name field. vicious.desktop shows up and wtf.desktop does not. If I use mv to exchange the files, vicious.desktop shows up and wtf.desktop does not. I have to restart gnome for this to happen. Also, I have to make alarm.sh owned by root for vicious.desktop to show.
Are you putting the desktop file in the system place or in your .local one? Actually, either way shouldn't require that, but if the executable is not globally accessible, you should use your .local store anyway.
Might gnome maintain a list of broken .dekstop files that grows and never shrinks?
It doesn't have a list like that at all. If you remove the .desktop file, it's gone. If you fix the desktop file, it's re-read and activated.
