Or there could have been a long standing problem on a part of the drive that you weren't using until now. And you may not realise there's been drive faults with Windows. When I used to use Windows in the past, you kind of got used to its flakiness, and glossed over various quirks as Windows being Windows. And going back even further I never got any warnings from Windows that my drive was bad. Yet when I installed Linux on it, it immediately complained about faults.
