FWIW, I had problems with this setup and a D-Link router a while back.  It was happy
with the manually assigned LAN address and devices connected to the other LAN ports
were able to get their configuration information from the main router via DHCP.  The
problem was with the wireless devices.  They couldn't obtain their configuration
information via DHCP from a server external to the D-Link router.
