Ok, I found a copy of FF-56 and I am using that now:
# rpm -Uvh /home/bobg/Desktop/firefox-56.0-5.fc27.x86_64.rpm
Apparently I had a moment of foresight and saved a copy!
"turn off automatic add-ons update." That might explain what happened,
one of the add-ons proudly announced it had updated yesterday. I will
make sure they are all set to not update automatically.
I will save your suggestion for future use though. Also I hope that
Firefox will eventually be able to use the add-ons I need, I check that
periodically but in the meantime will continue to exclude firefox from
my routine morning updates.
