If all Patrick did is what he said he did, like you, I don't see how he could have affected all three disks with gparted. So, I'm thinking disk malfunction of some kind. The -c will check if there are a bunch of bad blocks on the disk (blocks that can't be read), an indication of a failing drive. It is read only. You're right, though, that specifying -n as well would be safer.
