If the OP is using either akmod-nvidia or the binary blob, he'll get the blue/white progress bar, not the bubble, and I presume he is, as he's the one that mentioned the "blue line."
If the LED is off and you still don't get a login prompt, try "CTRL-ALT-F1" (or "CTRL-ALT-<F3 through F6>"--try them all) to get a raw console and see if you can log in there. If you can, have a look at the "/var/log/boot.log" file. You should get an indication as to what the issue is.
You can always log into two of these consoles, once as root and once as yourself, or if you do everything with sudo, once for admin work, and once for any stuff that doesn't need root/sudo. This lets you run top in one of them, so that you can see what's working and what's using the most resources, while studying the logs in the other CLI.
