Weird, but there's a LOT of stuff in Gnome that's weird (which is one
reason I do not use it).
I mentioned about the default. On desktops, numlock defaults to on, but
on laptops, possibly depending on whether or not there is a separate
number pad, the default is off. I'm pretty sure it's not specific to
Gnome. On my laptop, the numlock being on would mean I would have to
turn it off to be able to use the laptop normally.
On a side note, the dollar store here is selling usb number pads for $3.

I'm not an accountant--and even if I were, my machines all have keypads!
