I am currently using Firefox 49.0a1 on both Linux and Windows and

have also checked about:config and there appears to be no java entries
in there whatsoever.
Does anyone know any way to activate Java in these versions of
Firefox?
You shouldn't have to do any manual linking or copying. Install the
icedtea-web package and it should just work. I've been using it for a
long time.
I have installed the icedtea-web package and have placed a link from the
firefox plugins directory to where the icedtea-web package installs the
plugin. This needs to be done because the upstream version of 64 bit
firefox is compatible with Ubuntu and not with Fedora.
Why aren't you just using the Fedora packaged Firefox?
Because I wanted to use the same version of Firefox across all of the
operating systems I use. I use the nightly version of Firefox.
