Playing "what ifs" with history doesn't really do any good but for what it is worth, avahi and pulseaudio got rapidly adopted by distributions when Lennart wasn't working for Red Hat or any other vendor. Lennart working for Red Hat probably helped systemd adoption although he did work on the project on his own initially. It is not quite black and white as you claim.
