Why? Something went wrong. Once. I spent several days, off and on, cleaning up cruft and duplicate packages from a CLI, got the GUI working and all was well. Tish happens. With every gain, there's a risk. For me, going from 17 to 18 had too many risks; jumping right to 19 looks much safer. YMMV and all that, but as long as you have /home on its own partition, and that's backed up, there's no reason to be afraid.
