Thanx for finding that. Thunderbird has decided (again) to ignore the fact that I'm online when it starts, and I knew I'd fixed that once. Following to different bug reports in the comments took me to the one with the fix: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=790106 where the second setting in Comment 6 is what I needed.
