In order to do that, I'd need to install NM on my desktop (I got rid of it a long time ago.) try using it and have it fail again at reboot. For me, getting rid of it on my desktop solved the problem; it's OK on my laptop because the laptop does everything through DHCP, which NM understands and handles correctly.
