Fedora 18, Gnome 3, and the "future" of Compiz

Hey all, first post.

Just installed Fedora 18 on a new Dell Precision series laptop.

Gnome 3 looks gorgeous -- was on the fence for quite awhile with Fedora 14 due to the backlash Gnome 3 received post-launch.

In regard to approximating a Gnome-Do/Compiz setup:

1) how is the multi-monitor support? Remember reading there was an issue where laptop screen was pinned (i.e. could not switch between virtual workspaces) or other non-desirable behavior.

2) Seems there is a Gnome-Do-esque application finder widget; can that be called up with a ctrl-space hotkey combo like Gnome-Do?

3) Compiz: I have no need for cubes and other 3-d madness, but rather, a set of must-have features that Compiz provides:
     a) snap-to-grid (e.g. hot key combo snap terminal windows to quadrant, split screen, 1/3, 2/3)
     b) zip to cursor (e.g. app opens in primary monitor, move cursor to secondary monitor and hot key combo triggers app moves to cursor)
     3) polarize (at night white backgrounds are hard on the eyes, Compiz let's me hot key polarize focused app and/or entire desktop from white to black)
     4) resize window (place cursor anywhere in app window and hot key resize window without having to drag corners)

One of the reasons I ditched OS X a few years ago was due to the lack of the above features.

Is Compiz support long-term or as a stop gap measure for Fedora 18 release only?

I know I can try Mate with Compiz but, to be honest, having just tried it, Mate is fairly hideous in the looks department compared to Gnome 3. Emerald Theme helps cover things up, but given that Gnome 2 is living in the past as far as a distro supported WM is concerned, I'd like to give Gnome 3 a shot.

Appreciate feedback re: the above.

Thanks
