That problem appears to be fixed.  So should be fairly good now.

Synapse is a light weight alternative to GNOME Do if you prefer a app like that.  GNOME 2.8 which will be part of Fedora 19 also has search functionality integrated into more stuff

Is Compiz support long-term or as a stop gap measure for Fedora 18 release only?

Compiz probably will be around for a few releases based on maintainer interest and assuming upstream continues to be active.  However Compiz isn't usable within GNOME 3 since the entirely GNOME Shell UI is just a plugin for Mutter (a port of Metacity to Clutter)
