Depending on the e-mail address, it was because an ISP's mail server accepted and stored it, because my web hosting company accepted and stored it, or because a free e-mail service accepted and stored it. None of witch required that any of my machines accept incoming mail connections. Instead, my mail client initiated a connection to their server, and retrieved my mail. If you look into it, you will discover that this is how most people get their e-mail - they connect to a server run by someone else.
