If you want to play real 5.1 sound, just configure your preferred apps
(xine, mplayer) so that they use the alsa surround51 device. If you want to
play stereo (2ch) sound through 6 speakers, you have to write a proper
.asoundrc file. You can use the ttable method or the "route policy
duplicate" option. The alsa-project wiki has all the info you need about
this.
