I think it requires admin access, not entirely sure. Other than kernel, glibc, openssl, and maybe a few others, what packages need specific say i686 builds?

The atlas package could benefit from this. It provides speed-optimized binary compatible versions of blas and lapack libs. Currently it uses the somewhat ugly solution of creating separate atlas-sse, atlas-3dnow, and atlas-sse2 subpackages.
