I am not having any difficulty connecting to my KDE desktop with Android 8.  I do have to select "transfer files" when my phone connects via USB and prompts for an action in the notification.

However I have also discovered that KDE connect can access files on my phone anytime my phone is connected to my LAN via WiFi.  It is a little slower, but still very handy.
