kquitapp5 command doesn't work from tty. I was able to killall plasmashell 
from tty. Lock screen remained intact when your system is locked and you kill 
plasmashell from another tty.

I will see what works when lock screen freezes next time.

Yes, what I meant was that there are no obvious symptoms that I was able to 
notice at a glance. No process was eating up cpu, ram or load average.
