I have had exactly these symptoms since a week or two 
corresponding to about the time of the intel update. I 
had changed no settings at all, but plasma would be 
locked after a period of idleness and turned-off 
screen.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I 
changed the default openGL2/GLX to openGL3.1/EGL and, 
one day later, I have had no problems.

Before, when I opened Firefox, too, there were 
curiosities: the program would open in a small size 
and the rest of the desktop would be black. It would 
stick like that for a moment, before expanding to full 
size. Now, with openGL3.1/EGL, it just opens full 
screen right away.
