Stacy will be in Arizona again later this month, so he will be able to
take a look at our hardware then.

Have we had a specific issue recently?  Its interesting because I too
have experienced this issue but haven't been able force it to happen.
I've also not seen much in the nagios logs though its on a pretty
loose monitoring schedule (for example pings are done only once every
10 minutes)
