Because desktop is running on bare metal, I would expect, we don't need to worry about bare metal issues first/at all. pet-vs-cattle: I'd expect every server to be a cattle: made of a description how to produce the service and a system image. I'd only expect a few underlying "servers" below the infrastructure to be pets at all. Especially compute nodes should be cattle here, the same applies to storage nodes.
