Oh yes, it's confusing and non-standard. But let's remember that it's the security group, or any equivalent firewall outside the virtual machine, that is non-standard. Personally I expect the host to have its own firewall, even in cloud environments; especially since we can't be sure that one will exist for anything but AWS. I might just be paranoid though. :)
