Interesting - thanks for testing. There's some simple tricks we haven't tried yet for reducing memory usage - for example, deleting /run/initramfs/lib/{modules,firmware} before (or immediately after) switching to the "real" root. Should free up 20-40MB of RAM, depending on arch.. If you're interested, you could test that by booting with "rd.break" and doing "rm -rf /run/initramfs/lib/{modules,firmware}", then exiting the shell to continue boot.
