Now I managed to boot a Debian 6 live image which uses kernel 2.6.32 and
ALSA 1.0.21. Despite the fact that alsamixer behaved strange (volume
level could not be raised above a certain and very low level, resulting
in low output volume) and hdspmixer complained about no RME cards
(according to the changelog, AES32 support was added in hdspmixer after
1.0.24) simple stereo playback using aplay worked.

My summary so far for the simple aplay test on my RME AES32 card:

- Debian 5 with kernel 2.6.26 and ALSA 1.0.16 works
- Debian 6 with kernel 2.6.32 and ALSA 1.0.21 works, modulo mixer
problems
- Debian 7 with kernel 3.2 and ALSA 1.0.24 is broken (playback sounds
like portions of the sample are skipped approx. 2 times per second)

Tino
