If you don't get any error message in this either, you can check the
mixer settings with 'amixer -c hw:1 (controls|cget|cset)'.

On a different note, are you sure your device can be used the way you
expect? Did you test this with an OS officially supported by Roland?
Because from the techical description on the website, I don't fully
understand what the playback functionality on USB is there for.

Did you try to record anything from the device (arecord)?
