Could you try again in this Thinkpad and see if that machine also shows
the "-71" errors? I'm just trying to rule out host controller issues.

Also, please provide the output of 'lspci -v', and it would be great if
you could also try kernel version 3.10 (it should work with 3.8 of
course, but maybe that gives us a hint).
