Could you be more specific about what isn't working for you?
I'd like to address the individual mono or paired stereo channels on my ADAT breakout boxes individually, using just ALSA and no jack.
starting jack yields
system:playback_1
through
system:playback_24

and
mplayer -ao jack:system:playback_1,system:playback_2 some.mp3
would play my stereo mp3 file on the first two outputs, 1 for left, 2 for right.

Maybe it would help if you tried to explain your usage scenario. Coming from JACK, I presume it's some sort of usual DAW type deal, in which case whatever software you're using should be able to use these pcm devices just fine.

The problem I seem to have is that I can only address ALSA hw:0.0 on that card, and I don't even get output from it. As said above, starting jack and using that works (once the volume is set).

I now use the route (& volume) plugin (see docs here: http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/alsa-lib/pcm_plugins.html) slaved directly to the hw plugin accessing my card (same as for the dmix/dsnoop), and then access these devices with "plug:" in front if I need format conversion.

That's what I would assume, too, from my (minor) understanding of the ALSA documentation.
I think there must be some asoundrc hackery that yields either 12 stereo pairs or 24 mono channels.
We seem to be in similar time zones (I'm UK), so if you need some more direct (over the net) help to get this working, I'm happy to lend a hand.

Indeed we are (germany -> CET here) - if you would like to log in to my box I'd be happy to arrange that for you!

Thanks,
 Christian.
