EUREKA!

André, it was your hint that eventually made me look in to all possible settings, and by switching "Sample clock source lock" to "on" (using "amixer -D hw:DSP cset numid=12 1") everything works as expected. I have confirmed that having it set to "off" under Ubuntu 10.04 still works, so this 'requirement' is new. Mplayer showed the same problematic behavior as openal, but jack and aplay worked with both settings... strange.

Well, hdspconf is a GUI for most of the amixer stuff, but "Sample clock source lock" is not included (!).
