André, it was your hint that eventually made me look in to all possible settings, and by switching "Sample clock source lock" to "on" (using "amixer -D hw:DSP cset numid=12 1") everything works as expected. I have confirmed that having it set to "off" under Ubuntu 10.04 still works, so this 'requirement' is new.
