no volume on 5.1 audio from ALC662 on HDMI

I have an Acer Revo 1600 which has an HDMI audio device on it.  I have that 
plugged into my Samsung plasma TV and then from the TV, I have a toslink 
connection to my receiver which can decode AC3 and DTS.

When I play a regular stereo sound to from the Revo, through the TV, I can hear 
it on the TV's speakers as well as the receiver's and the receiver registers 
that it's receiving a "linear pcm" signal.

When I play a 5.1 (dolby digital) sound file on the Revo (ALC662) over the HDMI 
connection, the audio stream seems to be making it to the TV but doesn't seem to 
have any volume/content.  There is nothing coming from either the TV's speakers 
or the receivers.  What is stranger still is that the "linear pcm" indicator 
goes out on the receiver as soon as I play the stream but the Dolby Digital 
indicator does not come on.

Indeed, everything on the Revo could be just fine and the trouble could lie with 
the TV, but (a) I don't have anything else to test with, to confirm the TV's 
behavior with, and (b) the TV doesn't have any trouble with 5.1 to the receiver 
in other use cases such as playing a digital TV channel, or playing a video from 
a DLNA server, with a Dolby Digital track.
