pulseaudio is off. microphone capture is too quiet.

Hallo Group Members.
My problem seems to be quite common these days:
microphone capture is very, very quiet but sound playing is ok.
But the solution proposed in such situations is just to turn off/uninstall pulseaudio.

I uninstalled pulseaudio, but the problem persists.

alsa version:
prompt$ rpm -qa | grep alsa
alsa-tools-firmware-1.0.20-4.fc12.i686
alsa-lib-devel-1.0.21-3.fc12.i686
alsa-firmware-1.0.20-2.fc12.noarch
alsa-lib-1.0.21-3.fc12.i686
alsa-lib-debuginfo-1.0.21-3.fc12.i686
alsa-utils-1.0.21-2.fc12.i686

My configuration (brief description):
some PIII 1Ghz machine + onboard intel sound card.
Additionally I have Ensoniq PCI sound card.
I also tested it on my friend's laptop. And here everything works ok. I just cloned the operating system to his laptop.

So:
test a)
intel sound card: Ensoniq PCI physically removed from system.
test b)
  Ensoniq sound card used.
test c)
My friend's HP laptop. Here microphone works ok.

operating system configuration is exactly the same for all 3 tests.

Cables are 100% ok, microphone as well.
I performed tests using:
a) skype (skype-2.1.0.47-fc10.i586)
b) audacity (audacity-1.3.9-0.5.beta.fc12.i686)
c) arecord -vv -fdat foo.wav (then played with: aplay -vv foo.wav).

During testing I iterated through all devices that are visible in alsamixer (F4 - capture devices). mic Boost +20db was on.

I disabled pulseaudio with following command:
prompt# yum remove alsa-plugins-pulseaudio pulseaudio

Unfortunatelly following packets need to remain in the system because very long list of dependencies:
prompt$ rpm -qa | grep pulse
pulseaudio-libs-0.9.21-2.fc12.i686
pulseaudio-libs-glib2-0.9.21-1.fc12.i686
pulseaudio-utils-0.9.21-2.fc12.i686

Details on configuration are:
