'model' parameter
Sometimes the support for your system (or a similar one) is available on the driver, but the right system model wasn't detected by the driver. You can try different values for the model parameter for the snd-hda-intel module and see if some of them fix your problem. If this works, please report this problem, providing the relevant information.
(TODO: how users can know valid values for the model parameter?)
We have an AMD sb600 or at least sbx00 series chip, each of us, with
problems, and a stupid brand name in the firmware (Asus in your case,
Hewlett Packard in mine)

It appears that the audio device has the wrong pci ID on this motherboard:
hal info
101: udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_1002_4383'
pci.product = 'SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)' (string)
pci.subsys_vendor = 'ASUSTeK Computer Inc.' (string)
linux.hotplug_type = 2 (0x2) (int)
linux.subsystem = 'pci' (string)
info.subsystem = 'pci' (string)
info.product = 'SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)' (string)
info.udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_1002_4383' (string)
linux.sysfs_path = '/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.2' (string)
info.parent = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer' (string)
pci.linux.sysfs_path = '/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.2' (string)
pci.product_id = 17283 (0x4383) (int)
pci.vendor_id = 4098 (0x1002) (int)
pci.subsys_product_id = 33815 (0x8417) (int)
pci.subsys_vendor_id = 4163 (0x1043) (int)
pci.device_class = 4 (0x4) (int)
pci.device_subclass = 3 (0x3) (int)
pci.device_protocol = 0 (0x0) (int)
pci.vendor = 'ATI Technologies Inc' (string)
info.vendor = 'ATI Technologies Inc' (string)
lspci -v
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device 8417
Flags: bus master, slow devsel, latency 64, IRQ 4
Memory at f5ff4000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel
I have verified that if the HDA audio device is disabled in the bios
the above goes away.
>From what I can tell the VT1818S should be identified as a via device
with a vendor id of
0x1106 with a product id of 0x0440.
