Alphanumeric sub-device names?

My sound card, an Audiotrak Prodigy HD2, has alphanumeric name "HD2".
qjackctl tells me that it has subdevices 0 ("Audiotrak Prodigy HD2"),
0.0 ("ICE1724"), and 0.1 ("ICE1724 IEC958"). Right now I am using the
alphanumeric name "hw:HD2" as device name in qjackctl, it has given me
considerably more stability than any numeric name -- and it made me
wonder. Is there an alphanumeric standard for subdevices? Can I point
to "HD2.0" and "HD2.1" and expect it to work in general? Or is there
another syntax?
