Assuming that you are trying to resolve a driver issue, you only need toinstall the driver package. You can leave all the userspace stuff – thelibraries etc – as they are. You will have to recompile your kernelthough, before you build and install the drivers themselves, in order tomake sure that you don't have two sets of drivers conflicting with eachother.
