Ah HAH! I went ahead and paired them up and 6 of 7 cards worked. I 
supposed the hold out is one that might have a hardware issue, and might 
be the one that caused the issues / kernel panic under BSD (The computer 
is a backplane system with 17 PCI slots, and 5 PCI busses. The 
motherboard itself is a removable card that is under a standard called 
PICMG. All Intel chipsets, seems to work fine).

Thanks much for the solution! So far so good!! I'll probably back it down 
to 6 cards, removing the non-working one just to avoid issues.

Still lots of tweeking to go, but this is a giant step!
