I can mute it all right using alsamixer. The setting is also remembered between reboots. It's not a satisfactory solution because I'm used to hearing the PC speaker beep on events like incoming email or jobs finishing execution. In fact, the "digital" beep is so loud (with the lowest volume setting) that if the headphones lie on a table beside me, I can hear it just as clearly as the PC speaker. I just have to remember to mute it before I put them on! I find it hard to believe that Alsa has no control of where this specific beep goes when the module is loaded or over its exact volume (I've seen in the source code that the played frequency is generated by the driver so why not volume?)
