And (playing around in the dark ) I now have sound... though I'munsure how it came about.
In bios I changed to the more complex sound sourceSelected that using pulseaudio.
Rhythmbox is still not working - seems to play at n times real time,with no sound output.
Amorak is working though (except  for the database)and playing .ogg files (not mp3).
utube still has no sound.

I guess there's still something sadly amiss.
(but I can listen to music now!)
