maestro3

Used the wiki.debian.org/snd-maestro3 walk-thru and the alsamixer doesn't work. On the walk-thru it says to change to the firmware directory then
./configure
cd maestro3 && make
mkdir /lib/firmware/ESS
cp *fw /lib/firmware/ESS
then modprobe -r snd-maestro3 && modprobe snd-maestro3
which didn't work.
After restarting, the modprobe seemed to work.
But it says to do it differently on the site. How do I undo or configure this to work?
