For me, this is not a work around as I expect I will be using gstreamer 
as the glue for what I am trying to do:

gst-launch -v alsasrc ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! audio/x-raw-int, 
rate=8000, channel=1 ! alsasink device=bluetooth sync=false
