I have been there with those problem on the Juli@ card, which uses the same chipset. First, use plughw: instead of hw:. (I never understood the explanation but it seems to be the proper fix). Confirm that it works with aplay before trying it with a sound program. Aplay doen't need a conf file to work, you can set everything from the command line. I set up an asound.conf in /etc that was very simple, but I don't want sample rate conversion or to play multiple sources at the same time. The Alsa wiki has a lot of helpful stuff and there is a wiki on updating Alsa on the diyaudio.com web site.
