snd-hda-intel module (STAC9205) front jack problem

Hi all,

I have a Gateway T-1625 laptop with STAC9205 chip. Built-in speakers on the laptop works just fine. However, when I plug headphones to the front audio-out jack, it mutes built-in speakers and nothing comes out of the headphones.
I have been trying to configure the snd-hda-intel module with "options snd-hda-intel model=<model>" option in alsa-base.conf referencing the ALSA-Configuration.txt, but none of the options is even able to produce any kind of sound thru speakers or headphones.
I'm currently running Ubuntu Jaunty. However, I have the same issue with other distros. I once was able to hear audio from front jack in Ubuntu Intrepid by messing with alsa-base.conf(can't remember what I did), but I had to restart the machine headphones plugged in for front jack to work.

What can I do to locate the source of the problem and resolve it?

Thanks in advance,

Hakan
