phew. ok, everything is working now. If you are curious, here is the
final setup:

The solution was to downgrade to:

-------------------------------------------------- 
Driver version:     1.0.18a
Library version:    1.0.17
Utilities version:  1.0.17
-------------------------------------------------- 
in order to make it work.



I wonder if it is this change here that broke it:

 The softvol plugin does in-place sample recalculation. The access type
